I have a 9 month old shih tzu and was wondering if she'll lose her coat and grow in thicker hair. She has a grooming appointment and I don't know if I should cut her hair short to let the new hair come in.

i have a shih tzu. Don't worry about the hair...it works itself out. We didn't do anything to my puppy and he has a beautiful coat of thick black hair!

Her coat has sleeked down since then, and she's now 8.

And runs the block. even the Border Collie defers to her.

They do shed their puppy fur, but don't worry about getting her a special cut or anything - talk to the groomer. :)

Yes they do, the older they get the thinner their hair gets .My GF had one for 14 years I saw pictures when he was three he was a puffball.

Yes they do. I am going through the same thing. Pryncess will be 1 year on Dec 3 and I noticed that she has a lot of matting. Whenever she has been to the groomer she may have only about 1 or 2 matted spots, but his time they are all over. My groomer said that she is loosing her puppy coat and her adult coat is coming in. So because I could not get the matted spots out (even with the detangler) she has an appointment to get it all cut low and she will start over and it grows pretty fast. She will just keep all the hair on her mask (around her face and on head). I knew it had to be something different because, the matting that she has is all over, not places where she can reach (you know how they lick themselves and then the hair dries...matted). So I am glad I called my groomer and found the real answer.

They will naturally loose their baby hair and will grow in a thicker coat. Shih tzus have 2 coats of hair. We have 3 and have never cut their hair. They are at the groomer every 2 weeks for bath, brushing, nails, etc. With their long hair they are absolutely beautiful. We take them everywhere we can and have had literally hundreds of compliments. Good luck.
