thanks for all your answers, i just dont want to be classed as mutton dressed as lamb as at 40 well im getting well you know, but i am going to take advice and have 5 inch cut and as you all say it will proberbly look more healthy and i will still be able to put it up, thanks everyone and merry xmas

It totally depends on the person, long hair can look very elegant on an older lady (not that 40 is old at all, but you know what I mean) as long as it is healthy and well kept, when it gets bushy and grey then it can look a bit ungroomed. If long hair suits your face and body then keep it long. I don't suit long hair, it makes me look old, so mine is getting chopped for Christmas, hope you love your new hair!
